Kitsap County's COVID cases fall 6.9%; Washington cases fall 8.1%

Washington state reported 17,590 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, down 8.1% from the previous week. The previous week had 19,139 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Washington ranked 11th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 0.7% from the week before, with 730,572 cases reported. With 2.29% of the country's population, Washington state had 2.41% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 15 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Johns Hopkins University has been getting Washington state cases on an erratic schedule, which can significantly skew week-to-week comparisons.

Kitsap County reported 444 cases and four deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 477 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 44,098 cases and 356 deaths.

Mason County reported 119 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 97 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 13,226 cases and 142 deaths.

Across Washington state, cases fell in 21 counties, with the best declines in King County, with 6,845 cases from 7,693 a week earlier; in Pierce County, with 1,930 cases from 2,228; and in Snohomish County, with 1,973 cases from 2,215.

Within Washington state, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Garfield County with 449 cases per 100,000 per week; Pacific County with 374; and King County with 304. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were King County, with 6,845 cases; Snohomish County, with 1,973 cases; and Pierce County, with 1,930. Weekly case counts rose in 17 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Pacific, Grays Harbor and Cowlitz counties.

In Washington state, 69 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 78 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,628,383 people in Washington have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 13,115 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 86,246,101 people have tested positive and 1,013,413 people have died.

Washington's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, June 19.

Hospitals in 29 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 31 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
