Kennesaw looks to build new police headquarters

Apr. 13—KENNESAW — The city is looking to build an $8.5 million headquarters for its police department off Moon Station Road and Canton Drive.

The estimated 30,000-square-foot building would house sworn and civilian staff currently working at Kennesaw City Hall. The new headquarters would help to clear a crowded City Hall and give the department its own space, according to the city.

"A new facility will allow for much-needed space utilization improvements, technology enhancements and planning for future growth," said city spokeswoman Becca Graham.

The estimated start date for the project was 2024, although City Manager Jeff Drobney told the Kennesaw City Council this week that given rising construction costs, it would be best to start earlier.

"Let's see if we can save those dollars. If we can build a $9 million building in 2022, it could be an $11 or $12 million building in 2024," Drobney said.

The location and the potential savings for the city were popular Monday among council members, but the project remains in the discussion stage.
