Keith Mayer: Crews respond to house fire in eastern Berks County

May 4—Fire crews were dispatched shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to a house reportedly engulfed in flames.

The call went out for a house in the 1200 block of Powder Mill Hollow in Earl Township.

Emergency reports were that a passerby called 911, and spotted a disabled man on the front porch then helped the man off the porch of the burning house.

Crews reported smoke visible on approach, visible from a mile away.

One of the township fire company chiefs arrived on scene and reported fire through the roof of a one-and-half-story house. Crews began laying down lines and fighting the flames.

Powder Mill Hollow Road was closed near the fire and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

A fill site was set up at Route 562 and Farmingdale Avenue and that, too, would be an area to avoid.

It was unclear if the disabled man was transported for medical attention.

Numerous fire companies were called for their tankers to haul water from the fill site to the fire scene.
