KC men deal Blinn defeat, home today

Mar. 6—Kilgore College's men's basketball team scored a big Region XIV Conference win Wednesday night on the road at Brenham over Blinn, and climbed into third place in the conference standings in the process.

Coach Brian Hoberecht's Rangers beat (former coach) Scott Schumacher's Blinn Buccaneers, 82-76, Wednesday night, and have won three of their last four games. KC is now 7-3 overall, behind only Trinity Valley (9-1) and Panola College (8-2).

The Rangers host Paris (6-5) at 4 p.m. today.

KC led by just two, 36-34, at the half in Brenham, but managed to hold off the Bucs in the second half for the close win.

It helped that Da'Sean Nelson and K.J. Jenkins combined for 50 points — yep, half a hundred — and 16 rebounds. Nelson had 28 points and 10 rebounds, to go with two steals and an assist, in the game, and Jenkins added 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Stephan Morris had eight points, three rebounds and an assist off the bench, and Dantwan Grimes scored eight points, had six assists and five rebounds. Also for KC, Tysen Banks had six points, seven assists and a rebounds; Duane Posey had four points; and Javonne Lowerey, Paul Otieno, and Dylan Cabs each had two points — Lowrey had an assist and a steal; Otieno had six rebounds and blocked three shots; and Cabs blocked two shots, and had two rebounds.

Tyler Washington led Blinn with 15 points, and Calvin Carpenter added 14.

The Lady Rangers were off Wednesday night after losing at Blinn on Monday, 88-78. Coach Addie Lees' Lady Rangers are 5-7 overall, and 4-4 in conference play. They play today at Panola College in Carthage, a 2 p.m. start, and are at Jacksonville College on Wednesday night at 5:30. KC's ladies will have played five straight road games after the finish of that one.

Their 4-4 conference record currently has them at sixth in the standings — today's opponent, Panola, sits atop the conference with a 6-0 record.
