TOKYO — In the midst of her longest day, the day in which she swam 2,100 competitive meters in the Olympic pool, Katie Ledecky wanted to know what time it was.

“It’s what, like 1:15 now?” she asked as she sat at a long table in front of reporters at her press conference for her silver medal in the women’s 400 freestyle Monday.

By necessity, she had planned her day to the minute, so this information was important. After she left the press conference room, she had to stop in drug testing, then circle back to the U.S. team area to gather her belongings, then hop on a bus back to the Olympic Village.

“I’ll probably eat when I get back there,” she said, “and I think I’m going to come back over around 4:30-4:45 p.m. so I’ll probably have about 2 1/2 hours to maybe get my legs up (to rest) and do it all again.”

Doing it all again as in more swimming, first in the qualifying heats for the 200 freestyle, then, two hours later, in the heats for the 1,500 freestyle — the rarest and most impressive double in her sport.

One should never make too much of qualifying times, but it’s worth noting that at 7:05 p.m., Ledecky was diving back into the pool for her 200 freestyle heat, which she won in 1:55.28. That also turned out to be the top qualifying time in the event. Ariarne Titmus, who beat Ledecky for the 400 free gold medal, had the fourth-fastest time in 1:55.88.

Then, at 9:09 p.m., Ledecky was back at it in 1,500 free qualifying, swimming the eighth-fastest time in history in 15:35.35 to qualify first in that event, too.

“I was just happy with how it went,” she said of her two nighttime swims. “Happy that it’s over and I got the job done. I’ll sleep well tonight, I’ll tell you that.”

This was how she described her evening plans earlier in the day:

“I’ll do my usual warm-up and just focus on the 200 free at first, and then I think I have a good solid two hours tonight between the 200 and the mile, so I’ll probably take my racing suit off and put it back on and warm down between.”

Ledecky had a similarly crazy schedule at last month’s U.S. Olympic trials, although at least she had a chance to sleep after the 400 freestyle because qualifying for the 200 and 1,500 were the next morning.

Here, the finals are in the morning, so they air in primetime back in the United States, so the “next day’s” qualifying heats are actually in the evening of the same day, hence Ledecky’s ridiculous workload Monday.

So to summarize, Ledecky swam her second-fastest time ever in the 400 freestyle to win the silver medal, qualified first in the 200 freestyle and qualified first in the 1,500 freestyle, all in one day.

Onto Tuesday.
