Katie Lane leads Mogadore to tie with Maplewood for Division III girls track regional title

Massillon Division III Regional

Mogadore tied with Maplewood for the girls team title Friday night at Perry High School in a Division III regional meet. Both teams finished with 36 points. Dalton was third with 35 and Rootstown finished fourth with 33 points.

Sophomore Katie Lane claimed the Wildcats' lone girls crown, winning the 800-meter run in 2:17.39, ahead of Merrick Gibson of Rittman. Lane then ran the third leg of Mogadore's winning 1,600-meter relay team. Julie Tompkins, Brooklyn McIntyre, Lane and Amber Morris finished in a time of 4:06.69, more than two seconds ahead Steubenville Catholic Central.

The top four individuals and relay teams in each event advance to the state meet next weekend in Columbus.

Tompkins also qualified for state with a fourth-place finish in the 400.

Medgine Wojton of Lake Center Christian advanced to the state meet by winning the 100-meter dash and finishing second in the 200. In the girls hurdles, Marinna Atanmo of Rootstown won the 300 and was second in the 100 hurdles to move on to Columbus. Atanmo, along with Jenna Kurtz, Sasha Nichols and Melanie Plecko, will represent the Rovers in the 800 relay; they were third on Friday.

Orrville advance two pole vaulters to state. Ainsley Hamsher won the pole vault at 12-feet, 9-inches. Catrina Race also qualified from Orrville, finishing third at 9-foot, 8-inches.

BOYS TENNIS

Division I state tournament

The seven area tennis players who qualified for the Division I state tournament each lost in the first round Friday.

Jackson junior Alvin Altman, Walsh Jesuit senior Caleb Miller and Highland junior Elijah Hadler bowed out of the singles tournament.

Jackson seniors Lucas Immel and Ryan Kelley and Walsh Jesuit junior Michael Ulrich and sophomore Michael Vallone concluded their respective seasons in the doubles tournament.

Sophomore Nicholas Choo of Cincinnati Sycamore topped Altman 6-0, 6-4 in a first round match. Altman won a district title last week.

Senior Sai Dore of Springboro beat Miller 6-2, 6-1 and senior Chad Miller of Cincinnati Sycamore defeated Hadler 6-1, 6-0.

Dublin Jerome seniors Max Fickas and Tanish Pairu beat Immel and Kelley 6-1, 6-3.

Toledo St. John's Jesuit junior Tyler Wood and sophomore Jack Oswald defeated Ulrich and Vallone 6-4, 6-2.
