Kate Middleton and Prince William are moving to Windsor later this summer to be closer to the Queen, and they reportedly have their eye on Adelaide Cottage. But instead of buying the home, author Omid Scobie reports in Yahoo! that they are choosing to "privately rent" it. The royal expert also notes that potential renovations on the property will come from Kate and William's own accounts—a big change from when they moved into their apartment in Kensington Palace, where renovations cost $5.4 million in taxpayer money.

As for why the couple are moving (and why they left their London home after such a costly renovation), a source tells Omid that they want to give their kids “as normal a life as possible,” adding “They thought about moving to [their home in] Norfolk, but as active senior working royals they could never be that far away from London, so that’s where Windsor came into the picture."

Omid—who co-wrote the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry biography Finding Freedom—also confirmed that Prince William and Kate Middleton's new home won't have room for a live-in staff or nanny to their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louie. Instead, the royal couple will pay out of pocket for the staff's private accommodation elsewhere on the Windsor estate.

As for what happens to the Kensington Palace apartment and its sky-high price tag, Omid reports that the couple will still use the home as their official offices when they're in London, and plan to move back there when their kids are all grow up. As a palace source said, “Apartment 1A will always be their official residence.”
