Mahomes on possible extension: 'Want to make sure I do it the smart way'
No quarterback in NFL history accomplished as much as Patrick Mahomes has through their first three years in the league and now the Kansas City Chiefs superstar can look ahead to his bright future.
Mahomes propelled the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory in February over the San Francisco 49ers, leading a fourth-quarter comeback for the ages to secure the 31-20 result.
It’s almost unfathomable that he’ll suit up next fall under the provisions of his rookie contract. He spoke with Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports about the next steps of his negotiation recently.
“When you look back on your career at the end of your career, you want to look back and see a lot of success, a lot of wins, a lot of Super Bowl wins hopefully — it’s something where I want to look back and see a lot of success,” Mahomes said. “And like you said, obviously I want to get a contract, obviously I want to provide for my family for a long time and do everything like that.
“But I want to make sure I do it the smart way and do it the right way, and so I don’t know exactly which way that is, yet. I know that my people and the Chiefs’ people will talk about it, and will do it at the right time and for the betterment for the team. But I’m excited to be a Kansas City Chief for a very long time, and I know that’s going to be handled the right way because of the people the Kansas City Chiefs have in their organization.”
One of the hazards of winning is that you can’t retain everyone, as the Chiefs franchise tagged star defensive lineman Chris Jones, while Sammy Watkins could be a cap casualty this spring. It’s widely assumed that the Chiefs will make Mahomes the highest-paid player in NFL history, and really, how could you fault either party?
Mahomes made it clear that his intention is to keep winning above all else.
“Just know that we’re gonna try to win every single year,” Mahomes told Yahoo Sports. “Whichever way possible, we’re going to do it and we’re gonna try to keep as many people on this team as we possibly can that won the Super Bowl this year so we can run it back again next year.”
With a Super Bowl, Super Bowl MVP and NFL MVP on his resume at age 24, Mahomes will command whatever he wants in all reality, but he knows what it takes to create a sustainable dynasty.
The rest of the league awaits what his next deal will look like. There’s plenty of reason to believe it will completely reshape the market.
