Kansas basketball vs. St. John's: Jayhawks rout Red Storm in 95-75 victory

ELMONT, NY — Kansas men's basketball's 2021-22 regular season continued Friday with a matchup against St. John's.

The Jayhawks came in off of a 2-1 run at a tournament in Florida. The Red Storm came in off of a three-game winning streak. They competed against each other inside of UBS Arena.

Did David McCormack deliver for the Jayhawks in a way he hasn't yet this season? Did Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun continue to be the main forces for Kansas? Did Jalen Wilson show he's continuing to develop the necessary chemistry with his teammates?

Here's what happened, with the latest news first, at UBS Arena:

FINAL: Kansas 95, St. John's 75

The Jayhawks routed the Red Storm for another victory. Christian Braun, Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack led the way for Kansas.

Kansas leads 90-73 against St. John's with 1:30 left in 2nd half

Christian Braun has scored a career-high tonight. He's up to 31 points as the Jayhawks are routing the Red Storm.

Kansas leads 82-64 against St. John's with 3:45 left in 2nd half

St. John's head coach and one of his players each just received a technical foul, which will lead to four free throws for a Kansas team that's already on an 18-4 run. The coach, Mike Anderson, was in an official's way and yelling at that official after there wasn't a foul called on a Red Storm shot. Then, after that technical foul was called, the St. John's player bumped into the official.

It wasn't clear if the bump by the player was intentional, but there was no denying a technical was coming for the coach.

Kansas leads 80-63 against St. John's with 4:56 left in 2nd half

St. John's went nearly five minutes without scoring this half, and with about five minutes left Kansas has an 80-63 lead. David McCormack, Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun have combined for 63 points, which is exactly how many points the Red Storm have.

Kansas leads 74-61 against St. John's with 7:51 left in 2nd half

The Jayhawks are on a 10-0 run, and now leading by double digits again with less than eight minutes remaining. Christian Braun is up to 25 points for Kansas, and may have just had the play of the game with his and-1 finish on a dunk. Braun also hit the free throw.

Kansas has 19 second chance points so far, compared to just six for St. John's. That's what happens when you have 16 offensive rebounds, most of which have been pulled down by David McCormack.

Kansas leads 69-61 against St. John's with 9:32 left in 2nd half

Julian Champagnie is playing very well offensively for St. John's, but Ochai Agbaji is doing the same for Kansas. After the Red Storm brought it to a one-possession game, the Jayhawks turned to Agbaji to rebuild the lead.

Kansas leads 62-56 against St. John's with 11:56 left in 2nd half

St. John's has continued to be effective from behind the arc in the second half, and trail just 62-56 with about 12 minutes left. Kansas isn't doing enough defensively to slow the Red Storm down in that area, and will need to if it's going to maintain this lead.

Dajuan Harris Jr. hasn't been very effective tonight for the Jayhawks, and picked up his fourth foul with 13:51 left. It's led to more time for Joseph Yesufu.

Kansas leads 55-48 against St. John's with 14:44 left in 2nd half

The Red Storm are hitting their shots, especially from behind the arc, and only trail by seven points with about 15 minutes left. Jayhawks coach Bill Self has been less than pleased with his team's effort defensively at times early this half. St. John's Julian Champagnie is up to 13 points after a quiet first half.

Kansas does have a double-double from David McCormack, though. McCormack, who's been a force on the offensive glass, has 13 points and 11 rebounds tonight.

Kansas leads 43-35 against St. John's with 19:19 left in 2nd half

A quick, 5-0 run by St. John's to start the second half has forced Bill Self to call a timeout. The Jayhawks didn't look good on either end of the floor, with one offensive possession ending in a turnover by Remy Martin.

HALFTIME: Kansas 43, St. John's 30

Kansas leads 43-30 against St. John's with 44.5 seconds left in 1st half

The Jayhawks are poised to go into halftime with a sizable lead, as long as they finish the half well. That hasn't always been what Kansas has been able to do this season.

David McCormack is up to 11 points and eight rebounds.

Kansas leads 37-26 against St. John's with 3:52 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks are back in front by double digits, leading by 11 with about four minutes left in the first half. Ochai Agbaji is up to 16 points for the Jayhawks, and very well could be on his way to a new career high. Jalen Coleman-Lands hasn't been the sharp-shooter off the bench that Kansas needs, though, and is 0-for-3 from the field with a pair of misses from behind the 3-point line.

Kansas leads 30-22 against St. John's with 7:01 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks are up eight points with about seven minutes remaining before halftime. Both sides are even on turnovers and points off of turnovers, with seven and six, respectively. However, Kansas is leading handily in second chance points.

Not only does Kansas have four offensive rebounds to St. John's two, but the Jayhawks also have eight second chance points compared to none for the Red Storm.

Ochai Agbaji leads Kansas and all scorers with 10 points.

Kansas leads 21-11 against St. John's with 12:00 left in 1st half

The Red Storm have recovered, but still trail by 10 points with eight minutes played. Kansas has continued to shoot the ball effectively, while St. John's clearly hasn't. And while the Red Storm's press has seemed to affect The Jayhawks some, it hasn't led to any turnovers just yet.

St. John's leading scorer, Julian Champagnie, has only attempted one shot. It was a 3-pointer that he missed.

Joseph Yesufu was Kansas' first substitution off of the bench. He replaced Dajuan Harris Jr.

Kansas leads 13-2 against St. John's with 15:41 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks are in control early, leading 13-2 about four minutes into the game. David McCormack is leading the way with six points and three rebounds. He's been a force inside on both ends of the floor. Christian Braun has also been aggressive for Kansas offensively, and taken the ball to the rim multiple times.

Ochai Agbaji went up for the opening tip for Kansas, and didn't win it. St. John's won it to get things started.
