Kane says Spurs still making 'same mistakes' but confident of progress after Olympiacos collapse

Harry Kane was bullish about Tottenham’s chances of qualifying from their Champions League group despite a disappointing 2-2 draw at Olympiacos.

Despite being second best for much of the first half, last year’s losing finalists found themselves 2-0 up in Greece through Kane’s penalty and Lucas Moura’s wonderstrike.

However, goals from Daniel Podence and Mathieu Valbuena either side of half time earned a matchday one point for the home side.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Kane admits his side didn’t do enough to secure victory.

"We put ourselves in a great position, after that we controlled the game,” the striker said. “We didn’t play too well but we scored two goals and put ourselves right up there.

“But conceding a goal before half time changed the momentum. That’s disappointing from our point of view.”

“In the second half, it was 50/50, we could have done better on the ball but a point away from home that we have to try and improve on.”

Spurs famously lost their first two group stage matches last season but then put together a remarkable run to get the final of the competition where they were beaten by Liverpool.

Kane, while naturally wanting to avoid another difficult start to their campaign, is confident Spurs will be good enough to navigate group B and make the second round.

“We wanted to get off to a winning start and put ourselves in a great position.

“Last season we didn't start too well and had to play catch up, this is only the first game and we are definitely backing ourselves to go through.

We know we have a lot of improving to do.”

Boss Mauricio Pochettino was damning in his assessment of his players for surrendering their commanding lead.

“We are conceding a lot of chances and lots of goals and we need to change that,” said Pochettino.

“The only way we can change is being more demanding from ourselves. That is the way we are going to approach the different days and be more consistent.”

Kane reiterated his manager’s comments.

“You can see why the manager is frustrated," he added. "He has been here for five years now and we are still making similar mistakes as we were the first year.”

“We are not young any more, we are not inexperienced. We have played in big games for club and country.

“We have to try to find a way to get around it and improve and get better. That is all we can try to do.”

Tottenham face Bayern Munich next in the group, before back-to-back matches against Red Star Belgrade.
