Kandiyohi County reports one COVID-19 death, 131 new cases across west central Minnesota over the weekend

May 10—WILLMAR — There was one COVID-19 death reported in the region over the weekend, a resident of Kandiyohi County who was in their upper 70s.

There were also another 131 new cases reported over the two days in the 11-county area, 77 of them coming from Stearns County. Meeker County had the second largest total with 16, followed by 15 new cases in Kandiyohi County over the two days of reporting.

Redwood County had nine new cases, Pope County added four and Big Stone, Renville and Swift counties each had three new cases. Chippewa County had one new case while Lac qui Parle and Yellow Medicine County reported no new cases over the weekend.

Statewide there were 2,131 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. The state's cumulative number of cases is now 587,762. Of the cumulative number of cases, 41,896 of them have been among health care workers.

There were 15 new deaths reported over the weekend. The state's current total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is now at 7,231. The majority of the deaths, 4,378, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 5,911 of the people who died were 70 or older.

The information was included in the latest daily situation update from the Minnesota Department of Health, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties and the number of deaths includes:

Big Stone County: 598 cases; 4 deaths

Chippewa County: 1,516 cases; 38 deaths

Kandiyohi County: 6,506 cases; 83 deaths

Lac qui Parle County: 750 cases; 22 deaths

Meeker County: 2,537 cases; 40 deaths

Pope County: 1,091 cases; 6 deaths

Redwood County: 1,726 cases; 36 deaths

Renville County: 1,786 cases; 43 deaths

Stearns County: 22,077 cases; 221 deaths

Swift County: 1,048 cases; 18 deaths

Yellow Medicine County: 1,138 cases; 20 deaths

The state is now also reporting daily vaccine administration numbers. As of Sunday's report, 2,651,747 people have received at least one dose and 2,140,832 have completed the vaccine series statewide. That is approximately 60 percent of the eligible population of those 16 and older.
