Baker Farms – which distributes products under its name, the Kroger brand name and Southeastern Grocers' SEG Grocers brand – recalled its 16-ounce bagged kale with Sept. 18 best-by dates due to possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, according to a company announcement posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website Friday.

The products were distributed in clear plastic between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 and sold primarily in stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York and Virginia, the recall notice said.

The company was notified of a customer testing positive for listeria monocytogenes on Wednesday, according to the recall. The affected kale has production code 107020-21832 on the bags.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people or people with weakened immune systems and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Kroger kale recall

Kroger voluntarily recalled its 16-ounce bagged kale product produced by Baker Farms Thursday that were distributed in grocery stores in Columbus, Nashville and Atlanta divisions that serviced Columbus and Toledo, Ohio; Knoxville, Tennessee; eastern West Virginia; as well as Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.

Kroger has not received any reports of illness related to the bagged kale, according to a company announcement.

Affected Kroger products have a UPC of 11110-18170 and a best-by date of Sept. 18 and were pulled from Kroger's produce departments on Thursday.

Kroger asks customers who have purchased the kale to dispose of it or return it for a full refund.

Southeastern Grocers' kale recall

Southeastern Grocers also announced it was voluntarily recalling 16-ounce "SE Grocers Kale (UPC 3825911482) due to the potential presence of Listeria," in a recall notice.

The product with the Sept. 18 best-by date was sold in all of the company's Harveys, Fresco Y Mas, and Winn-Dixie locations.

The company says customers should dispose of the kale or return it to the store for a full refund.
