UNION CITY, MI. — A one score game quickly turned ugly for the Union City JV football team on Monday night, as the Chargers fell to the visitors from Addison by the score of 38-8.The score stood at 14-8 with just under five minutes to go in the game, with Union City facing a fourth and long deep in their own part of the field. An incomplete pass caused a turnover on downs that was the first domino in a 24-0 run over a 4:47 stretch, with the Panthers pulling away for the victory.Union City’s opening drive looked promising, however a fumble on fourth and short gave the ball to Addison with no points on the board. Addison took advantage, moving their way methodically down the field and into the red zone. The Panthers found themselves facing a 1st and goal from inside the 5 yard line however the Union City defense came up big, forcing a huge goal line stand at the 1-yard line, giving the Chargers possession with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. On the first play of the new drive sophomore Caden Hughes broke through the line on a fullback trap and rumbled his way the length of the field and into the end zone, scoring on an electric 99-yard touchdown run. Brendan Labar ran in the 2 point conversion, giving the Chargers the 8-0 lead with :27 seconds left in the first quarter.Addison answered, again methodically moving the ball down the field before scoring on a 14-yard touchdown run by James Randles. The two point conversion was good, tying the score up at 8-8 with 6:28 left in the first half.Union City’s offense went virtually nowhere on their next drive, leading to a punt that gave the Panthers excellent field position as the half drew to a close. Addison again slowly moved their way down the field with their patented Wing-T offense, eventually finding the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run by Randles. The two point conversion was no good but the damage had been done as the Panthers held a 14-8 lead heading in to the half.Addison developed a difficulty with holding on to the ball after the halftime break, struggling with multiple center/quarterback exchanges and quarterback/running back exchanges. The fumbling trouble derailed a promising Addison drive early in the second half, giving the Chargers possession at the 48 yard line with 6:20 left in the third quarter.Union City looked to move down the field thanks to a few chunk plays and a personal foul penalty on Addison, quickly moving past the 50-yard line. The Addison defense dialed up the pressure however, getting to the Union City quarterback, Kelub Miller, on two straight plays, leading to a Charger punt. The punt was blocked, giving the Panthers possession at the 42-yard line with 4:39 left in the third quarter.Addison proceeded to eat up yardage and time off the clock, converting on a handful of fourth down attempts, including a fourth and very long that was picked up on a broken play and a scramble by the quarterback. Addison held the ball going into the fourth quarter, leading 14-8.Addison moved into the red zone and looked to put the game away however a huge tackle for a loss by sophomore Gavin Kelly forced a fourth down and long. Union City safety Andrew Tundevold came up and shut down an attempted quarterback sweep to the outside, leading to a turnover on downs, giving Union City a key chance to move down and perhaps tie the game.Union City’s offense struggled to get any traction however, leading to the Charger coaching staff digging deep into their bag of tricks. On third down the Chargers pitched the ball out to Tundevold on a sweep, only to see the sophomore pull up for a pass. His teammate was wide open down the field but could not haul in the catch, leading to a fourth down and long. The Chargers tried the same play but the ball was batted down, giving the Panthers possession with 4:49 left on the clock at the 16-yard line.

That’s when the wheels officially fell off for the JV Chargers as Addison went on to put the game away with a 24-0 run over the remaining four and a half minutes. Addison scored first on a fumble recovery into the end zone by their own ball carrier, followed by a successful pass for the two point conversion, extending the lead to 22-8 with 1:30 left on the clock. On Union City’s first play from scrimmage the Addison defense picked off the pass, taking possession at the 35 yard line with 1:10 left in the game. Two plays later the Panthers broke free for a 35 yard touchdown run, giving the Panthers a 30-8 lead after the two point conversion. Union City looked to get their offense moving on the next drive however a fumble on the hand off was recovered by an Addison defender, leading to a 27-yard fumble return for a touchdown, giving the Panthers a 38-8 lead after the two point conversion. That’s where the game would end, with Addison defeating Union City 38-8.No individual stats were made available for the contest.
