Dinosaurs run amok in the new 'Jurassic World' short film 'Battle at Big Rock' that dropped while you were sleeping

Last year’s blockbuster sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, ended with Earth going to the dinosaurs ... literally. Following the destruction of Isla Nublar — the island they previously called home — the genetically bred giant reptiles fanned out across the planet, no longer penned in by electric fences or taser-armed guards. That means that Jurassic World 3, due in theaters on June 11, 2021, will presumably be the dinosaur answer to World War Z (call it World War D?), with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard dealing with the global implications of these free-range dinos.

Released on YouTube Sunday night while most of us were sleeping, Battle at Big Rock is the next step towards that future. Directed in secret by Colin Trevorrow and starring Andre Holland and Natalie Martinez, the eight-minute production takes place in a world where dinosaur attacks are on the rise, and ordinary families are left to fend for themselves. That’s the case with Holland and Martinez’s recently married couple, who are vacationing at Big Rock National Park with their blended family. (Watch the short film above.)

Their peaceful vacation is interrupted by the arrival of a Nasutoceratops and its adorable baby. As one of the young kids reminds her freaked-out parents, that species eats plants, not people, so there’s no reason to panic. On the other hand, the arrival of a carnivorous Allosaurus is definitely cause for alarm. The larger dinosaur attacks the family’s camper, forcing the human parents to get creative in protecting their own young.

Battle at Big Rock ends with a series of post-credits scenes that showcase other dangerous dinosaur sightings, including a Stegosaurus ambling across a mountain roadway and a Mosasaurus swallowing a freakin’ shark. Based on this visual evidence, it’s safe to say that future human vs. dinosaur battles won’t be limited to Big Rock.

Jurassic World 3 roars in theaters on June 11, 2021.
