Julia Gossett strikes out 20 in Jackson softball win, Sydnee Koosh powers Hoover softball

Julia Gossett wasn't perfect for the Jackson High School softball team Monday evening, but she was pretty close.

Gossett struck out 20 — out of a possible 21 outs — in an 8-1 win over Mayfield in Division I district semifinal game at Mentor. The win sends the Polar Bears into a district final against rival Hoover, which won its semifinal 11-4 Monday.

Gossett allowed just one-hit, a second-inning home run. The only other ball put in play was a ground out on a bunt attempt to third in the seventh. The other 20 outs were all strikeouts by Gossett, whose previous high was 17 this season.

Sydnee Koosh led Hoover in its win over Chardon. She pitched a complete game and hit a two-run homer in the first, erasing a 1-0 deficit. The Vikings scored four in the first and five in the sixth break the game open.

Hoover and Jackson meet in the district championship game at 5 p.m., Wednesday, at Mentor.
