Johnson County teachers honored during the Kansas Exemplary Educators conference

Eight area educators will be among those recognized for outstanding teaching skills through the 2023 Kansas Horizon Award program.

The educators will be recognized at a ceremony during the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network State Education Conference on Feb. 17 in Topeka.

Area recipients are: Cooper Allison, Woodland Spring Middle School, Spring Hill USD 230; Jordyn Burke, Corinth Elementary School, Shawnee Mission USD 512; Jordan Dillon, Blue Valley High School, Blue Valley USD 229; Lisa Frakes, Turner High School, Turner USD 202; Alexandra Furminger, Oak Grove Elementary School, Turner USD 202; Jennifer Miller, Nike Elementary School, Gardner Edgerton USD 231; Stephanie Ruley, Gardner Edgerton High School, Gardner Edgerton USD 231; and Sydney Sieben, Riverview Elementary School, De Soto USD 232.

Gardner hosts Daddy Daughter Dance

Gardner will be hosting its 11th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance for daughters ages 3 to 12 years old on Feb. 25. This year’s event will have a Sock Hop theme and include music, dancing and appetizers. Professional portraits will be offered with a download link. There will also be photo booths. Each daughter will receive a small souvenir. The sessions will be held at 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $45 per duo, and $25 for additional daughters. The dance will be held at Gardner Edgerton High School, 425 Waverly Road, Gardner. The dance is limited to 125 couples each session. The registration deadline is Feb. 10.

Mission walk-in health clinic reopens

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has reopened the Mission walk-in health clinic at 6000 Lamar Ave. with limited hours and services. The Mission clinic will be open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4 p.m. and will provide only immunizations, pregnancy testing and limited contraception services. All walk-in services, including tuberculosis testing, will continue to be available at the Olathe walk-in clinic at 11875 S. Sunset Drive.

The Olathe and Mission clinics will close Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 14-16 for staff training on a new electronic medical records system. The Mission clinic will be closed again March 21 and 22 for staff training. WIC offices in Mission will continue to remain open Monday-Friday.

Home improvement grants available in PV

Olathe Spelling Bee participants

More than 45 spellers are expected to compete Feb. 16 in the Olathe Public Schools’ Spelling Bee in the Summit Trail Middle School, 22201 W. 118th St., Olathe. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. The competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. The winner of the bee will be eligible to compete in the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
