John Oliver slams Trump's call for China to probe Biden: ‘What dictators do’

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver continued the discussion of President Trump’s requests for foreign governments to investigate Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Last week, Oliver created a segment titled “Stupid Watergate II: The Stupidest Watergate” and compared Trump to former President Richard Nixon. This week he continued that dialogue.

Trump has been accused of withholding government aid to the Ukraine in exchange for help for taking down political rivals. Last week while speaking to the press on the White House lawn, President Trump said, “China should start an investigation into the Bidens.”

Oliver said, “So instead of denying that he privately solicited dirt from a foreign power, he publicly did it and then asked another foreign power to get involved too, which is just making it worse.”

Republican politicians have dismissed Trump’s statement as a joke but Oliver claims it’s no laughing matter. Trump’s comments were not made as a joke, and his demeanor was serious. And even if it was a joke, it was not a funny one.

“People act on his jokes,” said Oliver, “Russia took that whole ‘Help find Hillary's emails’ routine pretty seriously. And shooting his mouth off now is significantly worse, because, you know, he's the president.”

Oliver went on to say Trump is abusing his power as president. “Using your office to take down your political rivals is what dictators do,” said Oliver, “Trump asking China and Ukraine to do that should really bother us.“

Last Week Tonight airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
