Joey Fatone Jokingly 'Sets the Record Straight' About Being Friend-Zoned by Pink: 'I Can Take' It

Joey Fatone is clearing the air around some hilarious, age-old myths about his love life and *NSYNC's fashion choices through the years.

Appearing in an episode of PEOPLE's "Defend Yourself" as the star of the new Heluva Dips & The Virtual Snack Buddy commercial for the Super Bowl, Fatone gives all the tea as he answers some fun-filled, hot box questions.

Most notably, the star, 43, explains what really happened when he was infamously friend-zoned by Pink back in the day. "I'm cool with being in the friend zone with Pink; there's nothing wrong with that," he says with a laugh. "I'm okay with rejection. I mean heck, I've been in *NSYNC a lot, so I can take rejection."

"That's definitely cool and I don't have a problem with that. [But] let's set the record straight," he jokingly declares.

As it turns out, the singer really gave him a chance — and her dad wasn't involved — after all. "I didn't tell or ask her dad that I wanted to take her out and I loved her. If this is what you're referring to here. I'm gonna set the record straight with her and I can go in and talk to her head-to-head."

According to Fatone, things were pretty chill. "I actually asked her out a few times and we went out," he says. "We were cool as heck. But I guess I wasn't her type, so that was it. We were still friends. That was it!"

Also while guesting on the show, the singer makes his pick between Justin Timberlake's now-infamous ramen hair and Chris Kirkpatrick's "high pony" locs — and of course, he proudly defends his decision. "I would definitely go with the ramen [look]," says Fatone. "I don't want to see Chris' dreads or pineapple head ever again. It was an interesting choice, we all make interesting choices in our lives. I even had red hair like Ronald McDonald, so that was an interesting choice."

But what some music listeners might not know is that JT's hairstyle was his natural curl pattern. "What's funny about the ramen hair with Justin Timberlake is that it's his real curly hair," Fatone reveals. "I don't know if it is straightened out more [now], but when he grew out his hair, that was the waviness."

Of course, the blond was a little artificial flavor. "Not so much the color [was natural]. I guess we called up and said, 'Hey, do you want the ramen color?' and he was like, 'Yup, I got you fam,'" the *NSYNC alum quips. "And there it was."

As for his hairstyle defense, Fatone tells PEOPLE, "I would go with the ramen noodle way before the pineapple head [because] the difference is, if I had the ramen hair, I would be able to grow it longer. It could be wavy in a ponytail kinda thing and [I could] do that man bun or keep it a little shorter. You can't do much with Chris' hair."

If he could bring one '90s fashion trend back, between oversized JNCO jeans and colorful jelly sandals, Fatone would choose jellies because "they would fit in more."

As for performing live in huge denim bottoms during his boy bands days, Fatone recalls,"I was surprised that we danced with *NSYNC with the JNCO jeans. We were not too bad, we just weren't sprinting. We were more hopping up and down, so they didn't get caught that much. Actually, it's a nice breeze when you drop down and the air blows up."

On a more silly note during the segment, Fatone defends his decision that a hot dog is not a sandwich and that it is not a crime to include veggies with dip.

"I'm working with Heluva Good! Shameless plug here," he says with a laugh. "With Heluva Good! I've actually tried the chip, the pretzel and then I move over to an occasional carrot or cucumber. There's nothing wrong with that ... [It's like how] *NSYNC was all around, you had your chips. You had your vegetables. You had a couple dips, [and] I was probably one of them. But in one of those things, it's a combination that makes it all work so well together. I think that was the five of us."
