He’s won a legion of fans on the internet, and the heart of his dance partner Dianne Buswell on Strictly, and in August Joe Sugg even set himself the challenge of winning over the critics in London’s West End. But this week he’s spoken out about why he’s ready to “prove people wrong”, following criticism in a national paper.

The YouTube star, who joined the cast of the musical Waitress in August, was expecting people to be a little unsure of him at first, but perhaps didn’t expect another actor to put pen to paper and criticise his addition to the cast this week.

“I completely understand where they are coming from” Sugg told The Stage, “and I understand the frustration. But I have been given this opportunity and I am going to go for it. I think anyone would if they were in my position.”

It’s actually forged the Strictly contestant’s resolve. “For me, it spurs me on and I don’t take it to heart. I like to prove people wrong and if anything it gives me motivation to work even harder to show I can keep up with everyone and join in and be a part of it.”

“I would love to do more. I have had an amazing opportunity put forward to me and I would never want to take it for granted – it’s not a one time thing for me,” he said.

This week Sugg posted an image from the set of the West End production when girlfriend Buswell dropped in to wish him luck. He captioned the shot, “Look who popped into the diner tonight to surprise me ❤️ @diannebuswell thank you for always making time to support me in everything I do when you’re so busy yourself ☺️
This topped off an incredible week working with incredible people.”

The actor and presenter – who has over 8 million followers on Youtube – will be going on tour with his dancing girlfriend next year. Sugg is excited about all that lies ahead.

“I realise how lucky I am to be in this position – especially the way I have come into it. I realise I have been very lucky and I won’t take it for granted,” he said, adding: “Who knows what will happen in the future but I have enjoyed it and wouldn’t want to stop.”
