Jos Buttler will captain England’s white-ball teams and bid to unite the two World Cups this year after he was named as Eoin Morgan’s replacement.

Buttler is arguably the world’s best batsman in white-ball cricket at the moment and the natural heir to Morgan, who retired from international cricket earlier this week.

With his Test career on hold since the end of the Ashes, Buttler will be free to concentrate on white-ball cricket and continue the work of his predecessor. Buttler has not retired from Test cricket but was left out after a poor run of form and England want him now to concentrate on white-ball cricket. The Twenty20 World Cup will be held in Australia in October and next year England will defend their 50-over World Cup trophy in India.

"I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Eoin Morgan for his outstanding leadership over the past seven years. It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved. He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I'll take into this role,” said Buttler.

"There is excellent strength-in-depth in the white-ball squads, and I'm looking forward to leading the teams out for the series that are coming up against India starting next week and later in July against South Africa.”
