Joaquin Niemann won’t head to Augusta National next week after all.

Niemann officially withdrew from the 2020 Masters Tournament on Friday after testing positive for COVID-19, both he and the tournament announced.

“I have tested positive for coronavirus and unfortunately I will not play in the Masters next week as a result,” he tweeted on Friday. “This event means a lot to me, and I have incredible memories playing as the LAAC champion, as well as alongside some of the game’s greatest players last year.

“I am disappointed but will do everything possible to recover quickly while keeping my family and team safe.”

Niemann latest on Tour to test positive for COVID

Niemann picked up his first PGA Tour win last year at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, which kicked off a season where he had four top-10 finishes and finished 27th in the FedExCup standings.

The 21-year-old has competed four times already this season, and took sixth at The CJ Cup last month. Niemann has played at the Masters once before, but missed the cut as an amateur in 2018.

Niemann is the latest to withdraw from a PGA Tour event after testing positive for the coronavirus. Harry Higgs withdrew from this week’s Houston Open after testing positive, and both Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson had to withdraw from tournaments last month, too.

There have been more than 9.6 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of Friday afternoon, according to The New York Times, and more than 235,000 deaths attributed to it. The country recorded more than 121,000 new cases on Thursday alone, an all-time record.

The Masters — which is traditionally held in April but was rescheduled due to the pandemic — will kick off on Thursday in Georgia.
