Jimmies third quarter run powers 79-77 win over Hastings
Dec. 5—The University of Jamestown women's basketball team used a big third quarter to take down Hastings College 79-77 on Dec. 4 at Newman Arena. The Jimmies (8-4, 3-3) flipped the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Broncos (6-5,2-3) 26-19 in the third.
With five minutes to go in the third quarter, Jimmies head coach Thad Sankey called a timeout with his team down 46-41. After the timeout, the Jimmies went on a run that saw them outscore the Broncos 20-5.
"The team helps with everything. If we are active on the bench, we get active on the court," Jimmies senior Noelle Josephson said. "Everyone pours into the game and it helps so much for everyone."
The Jimmies took their first lead on a three from the top of the arc from Kia Tower to make it 8-7 with 5:03 to go in the first quarter.
The Jimmies took a ten-point lead on a three by Tower to make it 33-23 with three minutes to go in the first half. The Tigers went on a 9-0 run to make it 33-32 with 50 seconds left to go in the first half. The Jimmies stretched their lead out to four with a layup by Jordynn Toliver to make it 35-32 at the half.
The Jimmies' Sarah Lenz splashed a corner three to give the Jimmies the 52-49 lead with 1:49 to go in the third quarter, drawing a Broncos timeout. At the third quarter buzzer, Tower splashed a three to give the Jimmies the 61-51 lead.
The Broncos brought it back to a four-point game with 4:30 to go thanks to a three from Allison Bauer. The Jimmies' Madelyn Schmidt went to the line for two free throws where she split the pair to make it a 77-71 game with 15.8 seconds to go.
This game was the closest game the Jimmies have played on the current homestand, which allows Sankey to see how his team can fight again.
"This one for sure is the biggest one for us. This one is a great win at home to get it," Sankey said. "That's a really big deal for us. I'm proud of our girls."
The Jimmies hit the floor again at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 when they go to Mount Marty University. The Broncos' road trip continues at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 when they go to Midland University.
