Jimmies overwhelmed in 10-1 loss at Midland

Sep. 25—FREMONT, Neb. — The first goal in University of Jamestown women's hockey history was scored in the second period of their first-ever game against Midland University on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Sidner Arena. The only problem for the Jimmies was that it came with the team already down 9-0 in what wound up being a 10-1 loss.

"The biggest thing that I think we took away from this game, the girls never got mad at each other," Jimmies head coach Amber Schaack said. "In a game like that, it's pretty easy to get pissed off at each other and start pointing fingers and things like that but they kept working hard, they never gave up through the last couple shifts, every single girl was going as hard as they could."

The Jimmies (0-1) headed into the second period only down 2-0 thanks to goals from Ally Rakowski and Callie Maguire. However, 80 seconds into the second period, the Warriors' (1-0) Ava Matthews-Mcculley took a shot from the point that hit Rylee Martin's stick and was passed to Jenna Grosdidier who backhanded it up and over Jimmies goalie Lilah Drew to make it 3-0. Under two minutes later, the Warriors' Keagan Shearer intercepted a pass in her own zone and sent it up to Kayla Flanigan who stepped past her defender and buried it five-hole to push the Warriors' lead out to 4-0.

Just over 17 minutes into the second period, the Warriors' Kaeleigh Kachmarski got called for a roughing penalty, sending the Jimmies to the power play. On the woman advantage, the Jimmies cycled the puck around before Sam Muller took a shot towards the goal that was tipped in by Crystal Wale to make it 9-1.

"It was really exciting, getting that first goal out of the way," Wale said. "Honestly, I feel like it helped a lot of nerves. It was really a team effort. It was a power-play goal and I think we were passing the puck around really well and we were all talking to each other."

The score would stay that way until 15:14 into the third period when the Warriors' Grace Halvorson took a few strides into the zone and unfurled a shot that was kicked aside by Jimmies goalie Makenzie Gibson right to the waiting stick of Kamryn Hayhurst to make it 10-1.

The two teams face off again at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Sidner Arena.
