Jimmies grapplers struggle in 43-10 loss to University of Mary

Nov. 30—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown took on the University of Mary and struggled to get anything going in a 43-10 loss on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Harold Newman Arena.

The Jimmies' Elijah Barajas started the dual off against the Marauders' Jaden Verhagen and struggled losing in a fall to put the Marauders up 6-0. The Marauders kept it going in the 133-pound weight class when Reece Barnhardt got a fall win in 1:35 over the Jimmies' Jace Goebel.

"When you get pinned right away, boom, boom, it gives that team the momentum," Jimmies head coach Jim Zalesky said. "We were getting beat at (141) and Degan kept fighting and when you fight all of a sudden you get the pin there, we were way behind. KD at (157) got a nice win, got taken down but battled back. I keep telling him, you gotta ride, you need to roll this match. He had four minutes of riding time and that's kind of when you want to win tough matches, that's what you gotta do."

The Jimmies got on the board in the next match as Degan Linne got a fall win over the Marauders' Laken Boese to cut the deficit to 12-6 in the 141-pound weight class. After a Jimmies loss stopped the momentum, the home team turned to Kaena De Santos who got a 12-2 major decision win over the Marauders' Anthony Velazquez to cut the deficit to 18-10. The next match saw the Marauders' Riley Noble got a fall win over the Jimmies' Trappier Botz, which started a run that saw the Marauders finish the dual on a five-match winning streak.

"It was tough, some of those matches you probably weren't favored in but you still gotta fight," Zalesky said. "We didn't have a really good (197), Jake (Rau) was out, we didn't have a real good (149) pounder but the guys in the back there, they fought. But they were just overmatched."

The Jimmies are back in action at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they go to the Doane Open.
