JI Track Meet: RHAM'S Calhoun sets pace on Day 1

May 21—Liam Calhoun was looking for a fast start to the 40th edition of the Randy Smith-Journal Inquirer Track Meet at Manchester High Friday evening.

The RHAM High senior delivered, winning the boys 3,200-meter run by over 35 seconds on day one of the meet.

The Randy Smith Journal Inquirer Track Meet was split into two days this year due to the forecasted heat Saturday.

Calhoun, who broke the 31-year old school record in the event on May 5 at Manchester High, finished in 9:37.17 Friday, 35.54 seconds ahead of East Windsor's Nate Kita (10:12.71). Harrison Krause (Glastonbury) was third (10:17.95).

In the girls' 3,200 race, Bolton's Megan Minicucci (11:25.12) held off Stephanie Burzynski of Somers (11:37.76) to give her team 10 points. Kelley MacElhiney (11:39.38) led a quartet of Glastonbury runners that finished third-sixth.

In field events, Manchester won both the boys and girls triple jump. Jamil Manu won the boys event with a jump of 43 feet, seven inches. Windsor's Grant Harris was second (41-7 1/2 ). Leah Nurse's jump of 32-10 won the girls title, besting Elise Whelan of Ellington by four inches.

Coventry's Alex Krause earned the Patriots 10 points with a win in the boys hammer throw. The senior's toss of 197-5 was over 38 feet farther than East Windsor's Nick Canora (159-3).

Layla Spann-McDonald (Glastonbury) won the girls hammer (138-7). Windsor's Lauren Plummer (118-5) was second and Ellington's Riley Gavigan (96-9) was third.

Glastonbury's Anna Hilary won the girls pole vault (9-0) while Sarah Christina was third (8-6). The meet continues today, with the boys 3,000-meter steeplechase and the girls javelin throw kicking off the action at 9 a.m.
