Jeremy Renner was run over in snowplow accident while helping nephew with car trouble

More details on the snowplow accident that landed Jeremy Renner in the hospital have been released by the Nevada sheriff’s office that oversaw the actor’s rescue.

Renner suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries in a snowplow accident in Reno, Nevada, earlier this month after attempting to help his nephew with a car issue, according to an incident report filed by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

Renner’s nephew Alexander Fries told authorities that his pickup truck had gotten stuck on the driveway multiple times, the report states, and he and Renner tried to free the vehicle using a PistenBully snowcat. A chain was attached to the back of the snowcat and the front of Fries’ truck.

Once Fries’ truck was successfully removed from the driveway and parked in the middle of the street, the chain was unhooked from the snowcat and placed in the bed of the truck. Renner then proceeded to turn the snowcat around, after which he stepped out of the vehicle to speak to Fries.

Fries then saw the snowcat traveling “directly towards him with nobody inside driving the vehicle.” Renner’s nephew quickly hopped into his truck in an attempt to remove his vehicle from the path of the snowcat, while Renner jumped on the snowcat’s tracks in order to get inside the vehicle’s cab. However, the actor got caught on the snowcat’s tracks and was run over by the vehicle, which ended up crashing into the front driver’s side of Fries’ truck.

Following the accident, Renner was flown to a hospital, where he was placed in an intensive care unit and underwent surgery. The “Hawkeye” star revealed his release from hospital care in a tweet about the Season 2 premiere of his Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown” on Jan. 16.

During a press conference Jan. 3, Sherriff Darin Balaam offered a timeline of events for Renner’s New Year’s Day accident, as well as speculated about the accident’s cause.

"We do not believe Mr. Renner was impaired at all, and we believe this is a tragic accident," Balaam said at the time, adding his office was investigating possible mechanical failure as a reason why the snowcat rolled. "We do not suspect any foul play."

The incident report filed Friday also includes a mechanical inspection report of Renner’s snowcat. While the vehicle’s hand brake was found to be “functioning properly,” other hardware issues were noted, such as a nonfunctioning in-cab brake indicator light and track speed pot. The report also notes the snowcat had a bypass mode that could “override drive modes.”

“The vehicle appeared to be modified to function not as intended prior to the accident,” Deputy G. Ashby wrote in the report. “I believe the mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident.”
