Jaya Grube, Grand Forks Red River finish runner-up at state golf

Oct. 5—JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Grand Forks Red River junior Jaya Grube finished strong Tuesday on the final day of the North Dakota Class A girls golf meet.

Grube carded an eagle and a birdie to close out her second and final round at the Jamestown Country Club.

It wasn't quite enough to earn medalist honors, though. Grube finished runner-up to Fargo Davies freshman Rose Solberg.

"I admire how tough (Grube) is because she had a tough couple of holes," Red River coach Eric Sanders said. "For her to step up and keep her head up ... No. 17 was incredible. She bombed a hybrid to 6 to 8 feet and made the putt. The last hole she had to make it from the fairway to have a chance and she missed that thing by an inch. Bounced once, went right by the hole and spun back. She tapped in for birdie to finish. It was a gutsy finish."

Sanders was named state coach of the year after the meet.

Grube shot a two-day total of 149, while Solberg shot a 148. Solberg shot a 73 on the meet's final day to earn her first state crown.

Grube finished ahead of Bismarck Century twin sisters Leah and Hannah Herbel who finished third and fourth, respectively. Leah was one shot back of Grube while Hannah was three shots back of Grube.

Hannah, the state's senior player of the year, was a three-time state champion from 2018-20.

Red River finished second as a team as Bismarck Century pulled away from the Roughriders on the final day to win by 10 strokes.

Davies finished third, followed by Mandan and Bismarck Legacy.

Red River finished eighth at state last year.
