Jamestown City Council approves roof project for City Hall

Aug. 3—Jamestown City Hall will get a new roof yet this summer or fall.

The City Council approved the apparent low bid for the replacement of the wood cedar shake shingles with metal shingles formed and colored with small stones to look similar to the cedar shingles. The work will be done by Brandt Contracting of Pisek, North Dakota. Its bid was $148,969 for the project.

Tom Blackmore, Jamestown building inspector, said the existing wood shingles were original to the City Hall building which was completed in 1990.

"The existing roof has deteriorated to the point it needs to be replaced," he said. "The shakes have become brittle with age and break in the wind."

Four contractors responded to the request for bids, although two did not meet requirements, according to Leo Ryan, city attorney.

"One bid did not meet the bid bond and the other was signed by someone other than a principal of the company," he said.

State law prohibits considering bids with those types of errors, Ryan said.

The two remaining bids were close and within the preliminary estimates for the project and within the city's budget for building repairs.

Blackmore said the new shingles have a metal base that is molded to look like the cedar shingles and then coated with small stones to give it the appearance of shakes. The product has a 50-year anticipated life and is warranted for winds of up to 150 mph.

In other business, the City Council approved Dave Hillerud for another five-year term on the Jamestown Planning Commission.
