North Florida routed by Florida Atlantic; JU women cruise over Florida A&M

The University of North Florida men's basketball team was out-shot, out-rebounded and otherwise out-played as Florida Atlantic rolled to a 76-40 victory on Sunday at FAU Arena in Boca Raton.

UNF (2-8) is 0-6 against the Owls (5-4).

The Ospreys had a nine-minute scoring drought against FAU, the final 2:33 of the first half and the first 6:27 of the second half. The Owls used that to their advantage, scoring 15 unanswered points to extend a 33-29 lead to 48-29. Sophomore guard Bryan Greenlee scored seven of those points.

UNF shot only .302 from the floor, while FAU hit at a .536 clip. The Owls also out-rebounded the Ospreys 40-26 and took advantage of 20 turnovers.

Jose Placer led UNF with nine points and Jarius Hicklen had eight.

The Ospreys will play at Florida on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and return home on Dec. 11 to play Austin Peay at 2 p.m.

JU women rout FAMU

Jacksonville University jumped out to an early 14-2 lead and went on to rout Florida A&M 57-36 on Saturday in a women's basketball game at Swisher Gym.

JU (5-2) was led by graduate senior forward Asiah Jones, who had 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. She scored five of the Dolphins points in the first quarter and Shynia Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 4:20 left to cap the early run.

Senior guard Taylor Hawks had 11 points, four assists and four steals as the Dolphins beat the Rattlers (0-6) for the second time in three meetings.

JU's defense helped limit FAMU to .214 shooting on 12 of 56 attempts, and 1 of 18 on 3-pointers. The Rattlers had 24 turnovers.

The Dolphins have won three in a row, primarily on defense. During that span, opponents have made only .260 of their shots, and .205 from beyond the 3-point arc.

UNF comes up short

Jazz Bond and Kalia Rougier led a last-ditch rally but the University of North Florida women's team fell 53-51 to Florida International at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center in Miami.

Trailing 50-44 with less than two minutes left. Rougier, a freshman guard, fed senior forward Jazz Bond for two layups to pull within a basket, then had the assist on a Bond 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to give the Ospreys (5-4) a 51-50 lead.

Kyla Nelson answered with a 3-point shot on the next trip down the court for FIU (5-3) for what proved to be the winning shot. Ariel Colon blocked Rougier's layup attempt, and Rougier then missed two shots in the final seconds.

Bond led the Ospreys with 30 points and nine rebounds and tied her career-best with eight blocked shots. She made 11 of 17 shots from the floor and 3 of 5 3-pointers but the rest of the team combined to make only 1 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Emma Broermann had a career-high 14 rebounds.

Tigers win with balance

Five players scored in double figures, led by Khalil Brown with 21, and Edward Waters beat host Paine 88-78 in a men's game at the Heal Complex in Augusta, Ga.

Brown added nine rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Elias Harden had 13 points and Westside High graduate Jordan Jackson, Cahlib Edwards and Bryant Nolan Jr., had 12 points each. Nolan added 11 rebounds.

EWC (5-6) pulled away from a 40-40 halftime tie.

Flagler gets hot

The Flagler College men's team shot 74 percent in the second half and rolled over Spring Hill (Ala.) College on Friday at the Outlaw Recreation Center in Mobile, Ala.

The Saints (6-2) won their fifth game in a row.

Jaizec Lottie had 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, Jalen Barr had 20 points five steals and five rebounds in only 19 minutes of play and Curtis Lewis had 10 points and four assists.

Flagler led 36-29 at the half, then broke the game open with a 21-5 run in the second half.
