Jackson, Goetz look to continue solid play at Sunnehanna Amateur golf tournament

Jun. 15—Palmer Jackson and Mark Goetz enter the 68th Sunnehanna Amateur on a roll.

Now can two of the top golfers in Western Pennsylvania compete against some of the best golfers across the country, including returning champion Preston Summerhays? The four-day tournament begins Wednesday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.

Jackson recently won the Pennsylvania Golf Association's R.J. Sigel Match Play, was a semifinalist in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball and lost in a six-hole playoff at the Westmoreland County Two-Ball.

Goetz recently was named West Virginia's first All-American golfer, earning honorable mention honors. Goetz was a runner-up in a recent NCAA Regional and is the returning 2020 West Penn Open champion.

Jackson and Goetz also were named to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Other local players entered include Connor Schmidt, Sean Knapp, Nathan Smith and Rick Stimmel. This is the 30th consecutive year that Knapp will play in the event.
