Italy reports 224 coronavirus deaths on Saturday, 10,176 new cases

MILAN, May 8 (Reuters) - Italy reported 224 coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday against 207 the day before, the health ministry said, while the daily tally of new infections fell to 10,176 from 10,554.

Italy has registered 122,694 deaths linked to COVID-19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the seventh-highest in the world. The country has reported 4.1 million cases to date.

Patients in hospital with COVID-19 - not including those in intensive care - stood at 15,799 on Saturday, down from 16,331 a day earlier.

There were 110 new admissions to intensive care units, from 109 on Friday. The total number of intensive care patients fell slightly to 2,211 from a previous 2,253.

Some 338,436 tests for COVID-19 were carried out in the past day, compared with a previous 328,612, the health ministry said. (Reporting by Gianluca Semeraro)
