Semyon Varlamov was warming up ahead of the Islanders’ matchup against the Rangers when a shot caught him underneath his mask, and he was in clear pain as he went down on the ice. Rookie Ilya Sorokin had to come in and play during the 5-0 loss to the Rangers on Saturday.

According to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, Varlamov has a “jaw issue” and no word has been said about how severe things are. The Islanders are set to face the Boston Bruins on Monday at 5 p.m., so Varlamov does have a day to see how he feels.

If he can’t go, Sorokin – the highly-touted rookie out of Russia – will look to bounce back against one of the better offensive teams in the game.

Varlamov was stellar in the Isles’ Opening Night game against the Blueshirts, collecting a shutout on 24 saves.
