For fall, Isabel Marant outfitted her men in a light and sporty collection that pushed the line to a new level of ease and veered toward preppy. She reworked classics like rugby shirts — as knitwear — to insert alongside her trademark windbreakers, plaid workwear shirts and slouchy tailoring.

“He’s after comfort, above all — but still, a bit of style, too,” said Marant.

She likes to jazz up the sportier pieces with a flower print or shimmery material or an atypical color combo — but dialed down those tendencies a tad this season, opting for more conservative color mixes and limiting prints.

Still, the designer kept things lively, color-wise, with bright blues accented with teal and a cheerful red, and in the details, too, melding striped knitwear collars into polar fleece jackets. Pants were relaxed and elegant, including light colored jeans made with a fluid, Tencel fabric.

Outerwear was varied. A long, reversible puffer jacket stretched down to the shins — a stylized flower print on one side, solid on the other — while trimmer options included a creamy-colored suede bomber or shearling letterman’s jacket.

Tailoring was elegant, yet relaxed, the trousers cut looser this season, paired with classic suit jackets.

The clothes sprang to life in the film presentation, which showed the models dashing around an old gym with wooden lockers, leaping through wooden coat racks. It came as a welcome shot of energy, as did the collection as a whole.
