The cause of death is currently unknown.

Academy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress Irene Cara has passed away at home in Florida. She was 63.

The news was confirmed by Cara's publicist, Judith A. Moose, who posted an announcement on Cara's Twitter.

She wrote, "It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available."

Moose continued, "Irene's family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films."

Moose also announced that they are currently working on the details of the funeral services, and a memorial for fans to pay their respects will come later on.

Alongside the official statement, Moose personally wrote, "This is the absolute worst part of being a publicist. I can't believe I've had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I'll be reading each and every one of them and know she'll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans."

Cara gained fame through her role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, for which she also sang the title song. In 1983, she co-wrote and sang the song "Flashdance... What a Feeling" from the film Flashdance, which earned her an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.

Under the post announcing the news of Cara's death on Twitter, Moose answered a fan's question to confirm the news once again.

Along with that, she stated that there might be a few posthumous projects of Cara's to come out in the future, writing, "We were working on amazing projects that would have made her and her fans incredibly happy. Her manager and I will finish them. She'd want that."
