Recap: Day 2 of Iowa high school state wrestling tournament sets semifinals across all classes

The second day of the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament is in the books, with the semifinals set across all three classes.

Not only are the individual storylines exciting, but the team races are heating up. Don Bosco leads in 1A, Osage is way ahead in 2A and Waverly-Shell Rock is atop the standings in 3A. All of those races could be wrapped up by the end of the day Friday, but they could also last well into Saturday's final round.

9:46 p.m. Tight race for the 3A team title

Several teams were lumped together at the top of the 3A team standings following the quarterfinals and third round consolations to conclude Thursday's state wrestling action.

Waverly-Shell Rock leads with 101 points, Southeast Polk is second with 85.5, Bettendorf third with 77.5, Linn-Mar fourth with 73 and Johnston fifth with 65.5.

9:41 p.m. Maddux Borcherding-Johnson stays undefeated at 285

Norwalk's Maddux Borcherding-Johnson remained undefeated following the the 3A quarterfinals at 285.

The top-seeded grappler at 285 won his quarterfinal match over ninth seed Carter Dawley of Cedar Rapids Prairie by a 3-0 decision.

9:29 p.m. Ben Kueter not messing around

Top-ranked Ben Kueter of Iowa City isn't messing around in hits quest for a fourth state title.

Kueter pinned Ankeny's Will Hinrichs in 12 seconds during the quarterfinals Thursday. Kueter's two matches at state have lasted a grand total of 26 seconds.

9:24 p.m. Ames' Danarii Mickel adds to a big day for 3A freshmen at state

It has been a big day for freshman wrestlers in the 3A quarterfinals of the state wrestling tournament.

Bondurant-Farrar's Nolan Fellers and Calrisle's Jaxon Miller made noise earlier in the quarterfinals at 138 and 145 respectively. Ames 195-pounder Danarii Mickel added another freshman victory in the quarterfinals by defeating A.J. Petersen of North Scott by an 8-4 decision.

Mickel will face top seed Macrae of Waverly-Shell Rock in tomorrow's semifinals.

9:14 p.m. Illegal slam costs Southeast Polk's Mike Slade at 170

Southeast Polk's Mikke Slade, the No. 2 seed at 170 in 3A, lost his quarterfinal match with 10 seed Braylon Kammrad of Lewis Central after getting called for an illegal slam.

Kammrad advances to the semifinals at 170 to take on 11th seed Kaia Fox of Johnston.

9:06 p.m. Gabe Arnold wrestling like a machine

Top-ranked and undefeated Iowa recruit Gabe Arnold of Iowa City mowed through another foe during the 3A state quarterfinals at 182.

Arnold thumped Southeast Polk's Holden Hansen by tech fall, 21-6 to cruise into Friday's semifinals.

8:51 p.m. Carlisle's Jaxon Miller stuns No. 2 seed at 145

Carlisle freshman Jaxon Miller made his way into the 3A semifinals at 145 with an upset victory over No. 2 seed Tycho Carmichael of Bettendorf.

Miller, the No. 7 seed, defeated Carmichael in the quarterfinals by a 4-1 decision. He will try and pull off another upset in the semifinals Friday against No. 3 seed Braden Blackorby of Johnston.

8:36 p.m. Nolan Fellers takes out returning state finalist

Bondurant-Farrar freshman Nolan Fellers pulled off a big upset in the 3A state quarterfinals at 138.

Fellers knocked off Fort Dodge's Koy Davidson by a 10-6 decision. Davidson was a state finalist last year.

8:32 p.m. Ryder Block keeps on rolling

Top-seed Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock turned in another dominant performance during the 3A state quarterfinals at 138.

Block won his semifinal match over ninth seed Isaac Bruhl of Ankeny Centennial by tech fall, 23-7 in 4:40 to remain undefeated on the season.

8:27 p.m. North Scott's Ayden Golden with the quarterfinal upset at 126

North Scott's Ayden Golden is headed to the 3A semifinals at 126 as a No. 12 seed.

Golden stunned fourth seed Nate Bierma of West Des Moines Valley by a 13-7 decision in the quarterfinals.

8:23 p.m. Southeast Polk's Max Riggins upsets Bettendorf's Cody Trevino

Southeast Polk's Max Riggins, the No. 7 seed in 3A at 126, scored a 9-4 upset win over No. 2 seed Cody Trevino of Bettendorf in the state quarterfinals.

8:15 p.m. Top four seeds advance in 3A quarterfinals at 120

The top four seeds at 120 will be competing in the 3A semfinals Friday after each earning a quarterfinal win Thursday night.

Top seed Koufax Christensen of Waukee Northwest wins by fall over eighth seed Mitchell Murphy in 1:31, second seed Bowen Downey of Indianola seventh seed Justis Jesuroga of Southeast Polk by a 7-0 decision, third seed Timothy Koester of Bettendorf defeats sixth seed Carter Siebel of Pleasant Valley by major decision, 8-0, and fourth seed Blake Gioimo of Cedar Rapids Prairie scored an 11-4 decision over 12th seed Ryan Rider of Carlisle.

8:04 p.m. Dru Aayla waltzes into the semifinals

Ayala, the top seed at 113, easily made his way into Friday's semifinals.

The Fort Dodge junior defeated eighth seed Malik DeBow of Linn-Mar by tech fall, 24-9.

7:58 p.m. Cale Vandermark advances

Sixth seed Cale Vandermark of Ankeny upset third seed Michael Pins in the 3A quarterfinals at 106.

Vandermark earned an exciting 6-4 win by sudden victory, tying the score right at the end of regulation to force overtime, as he earned a spot in tomorrow's semifinals against second seed Alexander Pierce of Iowa City.

7:47 p.m. Southeast Polk's Carter Pearson rolls into the semifinals

Southeast Polk's Carter Pearson showed why he's the top seed at 106 in 3A during his quarterfinal match with eighth seed Reid Foster of Bondurant-Farrar.

Pearson pinned Foster in 54 seconds, giving him two pins in as many tries so far at state.

7:42 p.m. Time for the 3A quarterfinals

The 3A state quarterfinals are about to begin!

7:18 p.m. Spencer's Jace Fullhart with a 3A consolation shocker at 170

Spencer's Jace Fullhart delivered a major upset in the 3A consolation second round at 170.

Fullhart, the 21 seed, downed sixth seed Teague Smith of Fort Madison by a 2-1 decision.

Dallas Center-Grimes' Luke Benson stays alive in 3A consolations

DCG's Luke Benson is still wrestling as the 21 seed at 145 in the 3A consolations. Benson upset 11 seed Nolan Riddle of Fort Madison in the consolation second round by a 9-7 decision.

Gabe Cauthron and Chris Davis pull off minor upsets in 3A consolations

Spencer's Gabe Cauthron and Iowa City's Chris Davis both advance in the 3A consolation round as the 20th and 22nd seeds at 113.

Cauthron beat 14th seed Danny Cleveland of Sioux City East by fall in 2:44. Davis downed 12th seed Ayden Beck of Dallas Center-Grimes by fall in 2:30. The two wrestlers will face off in the consolation third round.

Time for the final session of the day — it's the start of Class 3A!

Class 3A competition begins now. Time to give a strong final push to Day 2 of the state wrestling tournament.

Osage dominating the 2A team competition

Top-ranked Osage went 7-1 during the 2A quarterfinals to raise its point total to 92.5 They lead West Delaware by 37 points for first place in the 2A team standings.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton (50.5), Burlington Notre Dame (50) and Webster City (45) make up the rest of the 2A top five going into Friday.

4:53 p.m. C.J. Walrath has been untouchable

Top seed C.J. Walrath of Burlington Notre Dame has been dominant at 182 during state.

Walrath followed up a pin over Atlantic's Brenden Casey during the second round Wedneday with a fall over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley's Jace Mulder in the quarterfinals Thursday. Walrath pinned Mulder in 3:01.

4:47 p.m. Roland-Story's Hesston Johnson making waves at 170

Roland-Story's Hesston Johnson advantaged to the 2A semifinals at 170 as a 14 seed.

Johnson upset sixth seed Henry Ryan of Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals by a 16-9 decision to earn a date against second seed Ethan DeLeon of Bishop Heelan in the semifinals Friday.

4:40 p.m. Dawson Bond and Max Gast surive

Top-seeded Dawson Bond of Red Oak and fourth seed Max Gast of Osage both survived big upset bids at 160 during the 2A quarterfinals.

Bond edged ninth seed Logan Peyton of West Delaware by sudden victory, 3-1, and Gast held on for a 4-3 win over 12th seed William Bolinger of Creston.

4:35 p.m. Lucas Kral's Cinderella story continues

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Lucas Kral entered the state wrestling tournament seeded 14th at 152 in 2A.

He is now wrestling in the semifinals.

Kral defeated Benton Community's Brenden Heying by a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals to earn semifinal match with second seed Isaiah Fenton of Burlington Notre Dame Friday.

4:12 p.m. McKinnley Robbins holds on

Top-seeded McKinnley Robbins of Greene County was given a great fight by Creston's Austin Evans in the 2A quarterfinals at 138.

Robbins edged Evans by a 7-4 decision to remain undefeated heading into Friday's semifinals versus fourth seed Tate Slagle of Algona.

4:06 p.m. Matt Beem survives

Glenwood junior Matt Beem, seeded second at 132 in 2A, advanced to the semifinals with a thrilling victory over seventh seed Cadyn Wild of Davenport Assumption in the quarterfinals.

Beem prevailed by sudden victory, 9-7, to earn a shot against third seed Anders Kittelson of Osage in the semifinals Friday.

3:56 p.m. Decorah's Mason Avila can't quite follow Wednesday's major upset

Decorah freshman Mason Avila pulled off perhaps the upset of the tournament Wednesday with his 4-2 victory over top seed Kaiden Dietzenbach of Burlington Notre Dame Wednesday.

On Thursday Avila tried to follow it up with another win against 9 seed Jerren Gille of Dubuque Wahlert. Avila put up another good fight, but this time he came up just short, losing by a 7-6 decision.

3:42 p.m. Williamsburg's Gavin Jensen gets minor upset at 120

Williamsburg's Gavin Jensen, seeded sixth at 120 in 2A, pulled off a small upset over third seed Ethan Skoglund of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the state quarterfinals.

Jensen pinned Skoglund in 5:51 to earn a spot in the semifinals.

3:29 p.m. HDC's Jayson Stevens gets first quarterfinal upset in 2A

Hampton-Dumont-CAL's Jayson Stevens pulled off the first big upset of the 2A quarterfinals at the state wrestling meet Thursday.

Stevens, the 12th seed, defeated fourth seed Linden Phetxoumphone of Webster City by a 6-5 decision.

3:15 p.m. 2A quarterfinals are underway

The Class 2A quarterfinals at the state wrestling tournament have begun.

2:25 p.m. Saydel's Kolton Keller taken off the floor on a stretcher

Saydel wrestler Kolton Keller was injured during his consolation second round match with Sioux Center's Kade Bauer at 132 in 2A.

According to the Register's Cody Goodwin, medical personnel were attending to Keller's head and neck area. He was breathing, but had to be taken off the floor on a stretcher.

2:05 p.m. Kaiden Dietzenbach bounces back

Burlington-Notre Dame's Kaiden Dietzenbach bounced back from his upset loss to Decorah's Mason Avilia during Wednesday's 2A second round with a win in the consolation second round Thursday.

Dietzenbach, the top seed at 126 in 2A, defeated Benton Community's Elijah Kupka by tech fall, 16-0, during the consolation second round.

1:56 p.m. Carter Liston gets upset consolation win at 120

Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center's Carter Liston is still alive in the consolation round as a 23 seed at 120.

Liston pinned eighth seed Caelan Oakes-Sudhish in four minutes during the 2A consolation second round.

Jake Haugse gets first notable 2A consolation upset

Mount Vernon's Jake Haugse became the first 2A wrestler seeded lower than 12th to advance in the consolation second round.

Haugse, the 19th seed at 113, pinned 13th seed Jacob Chapman of Charition.

1:30 p.m. Class 2A quarterfinals and consolations are underway

It's time for Thursday's 2A competition to begin at the state wrestling tournament.

The 2A quarterfinals and consolations are now underway, beginning with the second-round consolations.

Don Bosco leads 1A team race

Don Bosco leads the 1A team championship race through Thursday's quarterfinals.

The Dons have 87 points. Nashua-Plainfield is second with 74 followed by Wilton (68), Alburnett (62) and Lisbon (56.5) to round out the top five.

Top seeds all advance to the semifinals in 1A

All 14 top seeds in 1A advanced to the semifinals Thursday.

Nashua-Plainfield's Jayden Rinken (106), Missouri Valley's Eli Beccera (113), Lisbon's Brandon Paez (120), Nashua-Plainfield's Garret Rinken (126), Underwood's Gable Porter (132), Underwood's Blake Allen (138), West Sioux's Mikey Baker (145), West Hancock's Kellen Smith (152), Logan-Magnolia's Wyatt Reisz (160), Columbus Catholic's Maximus Magayna (170), Columbus Catholic's Carson Hartz (182), Westwood's Jackson Dewald (195), Don Bosco's Jared Thiry (220) and Lisbon's Wyatt Smith (285) all keep their title hopes alive.

Caden Ballou's cinderella season continues

Midland's Caden Ballou advanced to the 1A semifinals of the state wrestling tournament as a 15 seed at 182.

After pinning second seed Makade Bloker of North Bulter-Clarksville in the second round Wednesday, Ballou won his quarterfinal match over 10th seed Cannon Joerger of Wapsie Valley Thursday. Ballou will face third seed Kaden Shirk of Wilton in the semifinals Friday.

New London's Dominic Lopez gets career win No. 220

New London's Dominic Lopez, the second seed at 160 in 1A, defeated Don Bosco's Andrew Kimball by a 17-6 major decision in the quarterfinals at the state quarterfinals.

According to our own Cody Goodwin, that gives Lopez 220 career victories, the most in Iowa history.

Karter Decker pulls off another upset

MFL MarMac's Karter Decker earned a spot in the semifinals as the 13th seed at 145 in 1A.

Decker pinned fifth-seed Ryan Brennan of Emmetsburg in the quarterfinals Thursday. He defeated fourth seed Ryan Stortenbecker of East Mills in the second round Wednesday.

Lucas Oldenkamp knocks off Davis Bramman at 106

Lake Mills' Lucas Oldenkamp advanced to the 1A semifinals as a 10 seed at 106.

Oldenkamp defeated second seed Davis Bramman of Riverside by a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Reanah Utterback falls in 1A quarterfinals

Sigourney Keota's Reanah Utterback, the only female competing at the traditional state tournament, suffered her first los at the hands of top-seed Jayden Rinken of Nashua-Plainfield in the 1A quarterfinals at 106.

Utterback went all six minutes before losing to Rinken by major decision, 10-0. Utterback will face Earlham's Dallas Canoyer in the bloodround Friday.

She is one win away from earning a spot on the podium.

11:07 a.m. 1A consolation first 285 winners

Here are the winners of the 1A consolation first round at 285. Wapsie Valley's Derek Hilsenbeck (18), Maquoketa Valle's Aiden Salow (10), Nodaway Valley's Trenton Warner (11), Pocahontas Area's Joseph Sanders (20), North Mahaska's Trace Goemaat (14), Emmetsburg's Gage Jorgenson (12), Baxter's Aiden McFadden (9) and Cardinal Community's Isaac Cox (16).

Day 2 of the Iowa state wrestling tournament has officially begun with the 106-pound quarterfinals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
