Investigation into University Hill shooting in Boulder continues
Oct. 4—Boulder Police Department is continuing its investigation into a Sunday morning shooting on University Hill that resulted in a suspect with non-life threatening injuries and an officer placed on leave.
Officials did not have much new information regarding the case on Monday.
The courts were closed in recognition of Frances Xavier Cabrini Day so the arrest affidavit was not yet available, and due to the ongoing investigation, the police report was not provided upon request.
"We are following up on numerous leads from yesterday and appreciate all the information we've received from the community," Boulder Police Department spokesperson Dionne Waugh wrote in an email.
Waugh did not expect that additional information would be available on Monday, though she did confirm there had been no additional arrests related to the shooting that happened near the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
According to earlier Camera reporting, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said in a Sunday morning briefing that two officers were in a nearby alley while responding to a disturbance call for loud noise. At 1:27 a.m., dispatch alerted them to shots fired in the area.
As the officers came running out of the alley onto Pennsylvania Avenue, they saw a suspect firing a weapon, Herold said. It's not clear who the suspect was shooting at, whether they knew each other or if any of them have ties to the nearby University of Colorado Boulder. The police department does not have a good description of the other suspect or suspects. Investigators are reviewing witness reports and surveillance footage.
One of the officers opened fire, hitting the suspect. Two other people ran away, and neither officer was injured.
Herold said investigators believe at least three weapons were involved in the shooting based on the casings found at the scene. She said officers are looking for more than one suspect, but she could not specify an exact number of suspects, citing the early stage of the investigation.
The gun used by the officer was one of the three weapons noted by the police, Waugh confirmed Monday. The officer who fired the gun remains on paid administrative leave, per Boulder Police Department policy.
A city news release regarding Sunday's shooting referenced an unrelated felony menacing with a gun that happened at 2:02 a.m. nearby in the 1100 block of University Avenue. That incident, which occurred at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house, ended in an 18-year-old being arrested on charges of felony menacing, second-degree criminal trespass and prohibited use of a weapon. The person, whose name has not yet been provided, is not a CU Boulder student, Waugh noted.
