TowneBank Mortgage has been helping people buy their dream homes since its founding in 2000.
The hometown lender, which has maintained its community traditions and philosophies, was selected as a Hampton Roads Top Workplace for the second year in a row. A division of Suffolk-based TowneBank, the mortgage arm works to offer affordable loans and fast processing through advanced technology and remarkable service.
Peyton Mohrhusen, TowneBank Mortgage’s social media and public relations specialist, said throughout its growth, the company has not lost sight of its true mission — to continue to be a community asset by serving others and enriching lives.
With 718 employees total and 321 within Hampton Roads, the firm works hard to be a family-friendly company that puts employees first and profits second. Job openings are posted internally before they are opened to the public so current employees get the first opportunity for advancement. Several members of the senior management team started their careers in entry-level positions and were promoted from within the company.
Even while it continues to grow, TowneBank is focused on giving back to the communities it serves with billions of dollars invested in new growth and development. Mohrhusen said the company has provided home financing to thousands of families across Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Run by a local bank, its family members, directors and employees are all active volunteers, serving on numerous boards and donating their time and talents to local organizations. The company simultaneously provides a workplace that is geared toward building personal relationships and loving what you do and where you work, she said.
When it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion, the mortgage firm has a variety of initiatives in place to serve its employees.
“We have experts on the topic who serve our team as diversity and inclusion managers,” Mohrhusen said. “They constantly provide more information on the subject matter and ensure an open and safe environment to work in.”
Companywide employee resource groups on a variety of topics are offered, including mothers, LGBTQ+, women and more.
“These safe spaces allow for members of these minority groups and allies to speak their minds and hear additional perspectives on otherwise not talked about topics,” Mohrhusen said. “Groups are constantly added and growing as more employees discover a need for a new, safe outlet.”
