LAVAL, Quebec, Jan. 26, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) released its report into the accident which took the life of Brother Pierre-Luc Levesque, a CN conductor/foreman trainee, in Edmundston, New Brunswick, on December 4, 2018. Lyndon Isaak, president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), made this statement on the report: “The issues raised in the TSB report into Brother Levesque’s death are symptomatic of the shortfalls in Canada’s rail sector safety culture. The focus on profits and efficiency over safety must change. Every accident is preventable but after 13 fatalities in three years, it appears evident to our union that the rail carriers and regulators lack the commitment to take the necessary actions to prevent these tragedies. “I did not know Brother Levesque personally, but I am told he was a 33-year-old proud father of two who loved his job about spoke about it often. My heart once again goes out to his family, friends and co-workers. The Teamsters will never stop fighting to put an end to these senseless tragedies. “We will not be making further comments until we have had time to fully analyze the content of the TSB report, and the recommendations for rail operations throughout the country.” About Teamsters Canada Teamsters represent close to 125,000 workers across Canada, including 16,000 workers in the rail industry. Federal authorities say the amount of fentanyl seized in drug-trafficking investigations in the state of New York continues to increase at an alarming rate, underscoring how the pandemic hasn’t slowed a booming market for the potent synthetic opioid. Seizures of methamphetamine — another highly addictive synthetic street drug blamed in a national surge in overdose deaths — also are on a steep rise, according to Drug Enforcement Administration numbers released Tuesday. There were 404 kilograms (890 pounds) of fentanyl seized in the state in fiscal year 2020, a 59% increase, the DEA said.

A federal judge on Tuesday barred the U.S. government from enforcing a 100-day deportation moratorium that is a key immigration priority of President Joe Biden. U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton issued a temporary restraining order sought by Texas, which sued on Friday against a Department of Homeland Security memo that instructed immigration agencies to pause most deportations. Tipton's order is an early blow to the Biden administration, which has proposed far-reaching changes sought by immigration advocates, including a plan to legalize an estimated 11 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.
