New injury shuts down Detroit Tigers' Matt Manning 'for the foreseeable future'

Detroit Tigers right-hander Matt Manning has been shut down from throwing with biceps tendinitis.

The 24-year-old — initially placed on the injured list April 20 with right shoulder inflammation — showed up to Comerica Park on Thursday for an in-person meeting with manager A.J. Hinch, pitching coach Chris Fetter and members of the team's medical staff.

Manning revealed new information to them.

"He came clean today that he's not feeling great, so he's not going to be throwing for the foreseeable future," Hinch said Thursday. "He's got some biceps tendinitis that he said started bothering him after his second outing. He didn't report it. Everything that we said before was accurate to what we knew, but today he came clean that he's pretty sore in the front of his shoulder, which indicates (biceps) tendinitis."

Tendinitis appeared May 13, after Manning's second of four rehab starts for Triple-A Toledo. He has been removed from each of his past two outings, exiting after 49 pitches in his third start and 43 pitches in his fourth start.

He will see an "additional doctor," Hinch said, for a further evaluation.

Manning left his third rehab start May 19 with zero outs in the third inning due to dehydration, and he departed his fourth and final start May 24 with two outs in the second inning because of the organization's 30-pitch limit in any innings for minor league pitchers.

In those games, Manning pitched through soreness.

The Tigers never knew.

"I don't really blame Matty," Hinch said. "I know he was trying to get himself back. He felt a lot of pressure to come back and pitch for us as quickly as possible. He's watching the same thing you are, which is a rotation deteriorate from a health standpoint. So, I understand when that happens.

"Obviously, we can only operate with the information that we have in trying to put him in a position to be successful. Luckily for us, he didn't continue to try to do anything more."

Six starting pitchers are on the injured list: Manning, Casey Mize (right elbow sprain), Eduardo Rodriguez (left ribcage sprain), Michael Pineda (right middle finger fracture), Tyler Alexander (left elbow sprain) and Spencer Turnbull (Tommy John surgery). 

The Tigers feel desperate for arms, as the rotation currently consists of Tarik Skubal, Alex Faedo, Elvin Rodriguez, Beau Brieske and Rony García. After learning the latest on Manning, the Tigers determined García will make his second consecutive start Monday.

"We need as many arms to come back as we can, but we need them back healthy," Hinch said. "As much as we need arms, we need healthy arms. We don't want to do anything that's going to jeopardize anything longer than we have to."
