Injured hiker airlifted off Waimano Trail after sliding down trail

Jul. 25—The Honolulu Fire Department today airlifted an injured 28-year-old man who was hiking the Waimano Trail in Pearl City.

HFD got the 911 call at 1 :39 p.m. and responded with five units staffed with 16 personnel. The first unit arrived at 1 :54 p.m. A landing zone was secured at an open field at Pearl City High School.

Firefighters, using GPS from the injured man's friend's cellphone to locate him, hiked for about a mile along the trail to a spot near the Waimano Pool.

Meanwhile Air 1 conducted an aerial assessment.

The hiker injured his ankle and could not walk.

Firefighters airlifted him to the landing zone. They transferred his care to Emergency Medical Services at 2 :41 p.m.

EMS personnel treated the hiker, who had injured his left ankle after sliding down a hill on his buttocks, and transported him to a hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters escorted the injured man's hiking companion out of the trail.
