INDOOR FOOTBALL: Warbirds pull away late to earn first home victory

·3 min read

Jun. 13—The West Texas Warbirds' home opener wasn't going exactly as planned against the Amarillo Venom.

The visitors held a slim lead at halftime and increased it on a West Texas mistake to open the second half, putting the home team on its heels.

Only momentarily, it turns out.

The Warbirds' defense made four stops in the second half, two of them inside the 5, and the offense used that energy to catch and then pass the Venom en route to a 65-51 victory Saturday at the Ector County Coliseum.

It was the second straight victory against Amarillo in as many weeks for West Texas.

"Our defense did a great job of making adjustments in the second half," Warbirds coach Tate Smith said. "Coach (Jermaine) Blakely got them in the right spot and we started making plays.

"Give credit to Amarillo; they came out fast and did some things we didn't see on film from last year or from last week's game. But I thought we played well."

West Texas quarterback Daniel Smith was 15-of-22 passing for 239 yards and a franchise-record eight touchdowns.

Wide receivers Carlos Thompson and Darien Townsend each caught three touchdowns, with Aaron Dilworth and Jordan Gandy corralling the other two scores.

Nate Mace also recovered a muffed kickoff in the end zone for a touchdown.

Amarillo quarterback David Perkins was 13-of-31 for 194 yards and four touchdowns, with the Venom adding three rushing scores and one defensive score.
