Indian Valley, Strasburg, Conotton Valley pick up district semifinal wins

Winning pitcher Mia Rose broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and No. 2 seed Indian Valley added a third run on a wild pitch for a 3-1 win over No. 12 Dover in a Division II district semifinal at Strasburg Monday night.

The Braves (21-6) will face No. 10 Steubenville for the district championship Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Harrison Central High School. Big Red was a 3-1 upset winner over No. 3 Tri-Valley in another district semifinal.

Rose scattered five hits and struck out 13 Crimson Tornadoes in a game that was suspended by a weather delay.

Cam Enos scored Indian Valley's first run on a wild pitch after she tripled in the bottom of the fourth, but Dover evened things in the top of the sixth when Ellie Durant went deep to knot the game at 1-1.

However, the Braves regained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with Rose's blast and a second wild pitch that scored Ashley Baker.

Rose then closed out the victory for the Braves for the win, but the Crimson Tornadoes didn't make it easy.

Taylor Luneborg had a one-out single and went to second on an obstruction call. With the tying run at the plate, Rose got a strikeout and a popout to seal the win for Indian Valley.

Enos had a single to go along with her triple and Taylor Spillman doubled for the Braves.

Strasburg 9, Caldwell 1

Amelia Spidell struck out 14 and scattered three hits as state-ranked and No. 1 seed Strasburg knocked off No. 3 Caldwell in a Div. IV district semifinal at Cambridge.

The Tigers (22-4), ranked No. 2 in the state, will face state-ranked and IVC foe Conotton Valley Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Tuscarawas Central Catholic for a district championship.

Strasburg defeated Conotton Valley by scores of 10-0 and 2-1 in the regular season.

Strasburg was Monday led by Hayley Reiger with single, double, triple and three RBIs, Emma Gilkerson two singles and two RBIs and Sydney Sibila with a three-run home run. Maggie Richards posted two singles and Audrey Allensworth added a double, while Rylee Becker recorded two singles and two stolen bases.

Conotton Valley 5, Newcomerstown 4

Ellie Bower smacked a game-winning walk-off three-run home run as state-ranked and No. 2 seed Conotton Valley edged No. 6 Newcomerstown in a Div. IV district semifinal at Tusky Valley.

The Rockets, ranked No. 4 in the state, played from behind all night.

Masy Baker was in the circle for the Rockets, holding Newcomerstown to three hits and striking out 14.

Offensively the Rockets started slow, until the sixth. They scored a run to make it a 4-1 game.

In the seventh inning, the Trojans retired the first two Rockets. With two runners on, Chloe Stuber hit a shot to bring in another run and Bower came up to bat. She had a 1-2 count and then hit the walk-off three-run home run to give CV the victory.

Martins Ferry 10, Garaway 9

Top-seeded Martins Ferry scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to rally past No. 4 Garaway in a Div. III district semifinal at Harrison Central.

The Purple Riders (19-1) will play either Harrison Central or Tusky Valley for a district title Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Cambridge.

The Pirates ended their tournament run with a 17-7 record.

Garraway, who trailed 6-0, scored nine times to take a 9-6 lead in the top of the sixth.

With Martins Ferry leading 6-5, Garaway's Jordyn Keim smacked an inside-the-park grand slam home run to lift the Pirates into a 9-6 lead.

However, Purple Riders erupted for four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.

Garaway had the tying run on base in the seventh, but Martins Ferry slammed the door shut for the win.

New Phila vs. Boardman

The Div. I district semifinal between No. 3 New Philadelphia and No. 14 Boardman at Massillon was suspended by inclement weather and was to resume Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Spartans had a 1-0 lead and runners at the corners in the top of the first inning.
