Illinois woman killed when SUV loses a tire, crashes into I-43 median

NEWTON - A 47-year-old Illinois woman was killed Saturday when the sport-utility vehicle in which she was riding lost a tire and crashed in the median of Interstate 43.

Manitowoc County Sheriff's officials said an 18-year-old woman was driving the SUV north on I-43 about 4:35 p.m. near Carstens Lake Road. The SUV lost a rear tire, causing the driver to lose control and the car to enter the median and overturn.

The passenger was thrown from the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies have not released the woman's name.

The driver suffered minor injuries. She was treated at a local hospital and released.

Interstate 43 northbound from Manitowoc County C and U.S. 151 was closed for three hours for crash reconstruction. The crash remains under investigation.
