Illinois pilot performs emergency landing in Jasper County field after running out of fuel

Illinois pilot James Meyer ran out of fuel about 40 miles short of his destination, the Ankeny Regional Airport, and had to perform an emergency landing Tuesday, June 21, 2022, in a Jasper County soybean field. The pilot was allowed to refuel the plane and fly his aircraft out of the field, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

An Illinois pilot made an emergency landing Tuesday in a Jasper County soybean field after running out of fuel on the way to Ankeny.

James Meyer and a passenger were flying from Illinois to Ankeny Regional Airport when his aircraft ran out of fuel and he made the landing in a field north of Sully on S 48th Avenue E around 11 a.m, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies made contact with Meyer over the phone and responded to the emergency landing. Meyer was able to land his plane in the field without injuries, deputies said.

Meyer refueled the plane after landing and took off again just before 1 p.m., the release said. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the emergency landing.
