Icy roads around Louisville threaten Wednesday night, Thursday morning travelers

Travel conditions could become dangerous late Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning with rain followed by a cold wintry mix expected to hit Louisville.

Rain showers are expected Wednesday afternoon with temperatures in the 40s, but a cold front could bring freezing temps later that night, Louisville National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Neudorff said.

While there is still a lot of uncertainty, the Derby City could also see an inch of snow Wednesday evening.

There are concerns that the cold front combining with the precipitation and accumulation could create icy road conditions.

Forecasts show temperatures in the 20s Thursday morning.

Here's what the National Weather Service is forecasting for the next few days:

  • Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 46 during the day and a light southwest wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. The evening will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. South wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

  • Wednesday: A chance of showers before 8 a.m., then rain likely — mainly after 1 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 70%. It will be mostly cloudy during the day, with a high near 46.

  • Wednesday night: There is a chance of rain and snow showers before 9 p.m., then a chance of snow showers between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. North wind around 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 50%.

  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 30. North wind 7 to 10 mph.

  • Thursday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 15.

  • Friday: Sunny, with a high near 29.

  • Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 15.
