Ice Snaps Trees as Big Freeze Grips Austin

Tree branches snapped under the weight of accumulated ice as freezing temperatures continued to grip Austin, Texas, on February 2.

Footage by Twitter user @jasonfowler captured loud crackles from trees moments before their branches broke off.

Over 150,000 residents of Austin were without power on Thursday morning, with local media reporting that ice accumulation had caused tree limbs to fall onto power lines.

Local power supplier Austin Energy worked overnight on Wednesday through to Thursday to restore power and expected “major restoration efforts” to continue through Friday evening.

The National Weather Service said weather conditions were expected to improve through Thursday. Credit: @jasonfowler via Storyful
