Ice hockey: Cody scores four times, Perelson, Jimenez twice, as Cortlandt romps past Mahopac

BREWSTER — Twenty-four hours earlier, the Cortlandt ice hockey team was humbled.

Heck. It was routed.

But not so Saturday night.

Saturday night, the Rebels were the humblers or routers or, well, just plain victors as they skated past Mahopac 10-4 in a game that allowed them the luxury of giving everyone a good chunk of ice time.

Turning point

Most games have a turning point — a decisive moment when a game is won or lost.

That was fewer than four minutes into Saturday's contest when junior defenseman Colin Cody, who accurately labels himself an offensive defenseman, scored the first of his four goals and the game's first goal.

But turning point No. 2 (or the deal-sealer) was the bulk of the second period, when Cortlandt transformed a 3-0 lead into a 9-2, game-over, score.

Player of the game

Cody had two first-period scores. The second saw him easily dipsy-doodle his way around multiple Mahopac players before beating Mahopac freshman netminder Gavin McKee.

Cody was also right in the mix as his squad put the game away. He had two goals and two assists in the second period, his fourth goal making it an 8-2 game and coming after Mahopac scored those two goals in a 15-second span.

By the numbers

Fox Perelson and Jack Jimenez both had a pair of goals and Anthony Colasanti and Joe Riggio also scored for Cortlandt.

Jimenez's second score with just nine seconds left in the second period, was a no-chance-for-McKee, one-timer from the slot off a perfect feed from Cody from behind the net.

Kai McCarron, Matthew Pushkin and Riggio all registered assists.

Mahopac, which was outshot 11-4 in the first period, ended up tying Cortlandt in shots on goal with 32 as the Rebels gave more minutes to non-stars.

For Mahopac, Jonny Martirano had two goals and Jordan Donatone and Luke Kelleher each had a solo tally.

Martirano's second goal, which was the game's 14th and last goal, came off a nice, quick high shot after good passing from Christian Martirano to Alex Wanner to Martirano.

Christian Martirano and Kelleher both had two assists for the Indians and Sean Danahy, Wanner and Jonny Martirano each had one assist.

One of the more curious stats of the night belonged to Cortlandt goaltender Aaron Hathaway, who had both an assist and an icing.

Hathaway also had 28 saves, some no-rebound gems on point-blank attempts.

McKee, whose youth showed on a few soft goals, was strong against the backhand. And he had some noteworthy moments, including when he stopped three straight chances, the final two ono high-percentage shots by Colassanti and Riggio.

Quotables

Cortlandt coach Bart Mucci noted he was missing important players vs. both Scarsdale and Mahopac but it came back to haunt Cortlandt against ranked Scarsdale, a "good three-line team."

He noted Saturday's game allowed his team to work on passing and dumping the puck and being disciplined.

Cody, who said he believes his team can compete with Scarsdale when everyone is on hand, liked Saturday's game because it allowed his team's less-experienced players to get more ice time. He said that will help when they're put on the ice against better teams, like Scarsdale.

"It's definitely a change," he said. "This type of game gets inexperienced guys experience and gets them some confidence to boost morale."

Next up

Mahopac's next game is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. vs. Rye Town/Harrison.

Cortlandt, 4-1, will travel to Ebersole Ice Arena Thursday for a 5 p.m. game against White Plains.
