Hyde Park police shooting: Woman came at officers with knife, state police say

A Hyde Park police officer fatally shot a resident armed with a knife Friday, state police said.

The state Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident, in which three officers responded to the report of a physical domestic dispute on North Cross Road around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

According to state police, Hyde Park officers Joshua Kemlage and Bryan Sweeney and Rhinebeck-based state police trooper Christopher Miller intervened in a confrontation involving the 34-year-old woman, Jamie M. Feith, and a male.

“As the officers interviewed Feith, she armed herself with a knife and attempted to stab the officers,” state police said in a release Monday.

Kemlage shot Feith after officers were unable to stop her with a taser, state police said, and she died at the scene.

Police did not specify if the officers remain on active duty, or identify the male involved.

Under state law 70-b, "any incident in which the death of a person" occurs during interaction with law enforcement is to be investigated by the state Attorney General's Office.

The description sheds light on the situation, after state police on Friday reported the confrontation but declined to share details of the interaction or confirm the woman had been shot by police.

The new details reported Monday came as officials announced $600,000 in funding for Fishkill to purchase body cameras for its police department. Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra noted the need for the cameras became apparent following a Feb. 27 incident in which a Fishkill officer shot at least one resident amid a confrontation.

State police have been required under law to record interactions on body cameras since last year.
