Hunter Biden named his infant son in honour of his late brother, Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46.

The president’s son and his wife Melissa Cohen welcomed baby Beau eight months ago, with his name unknown until this week, when Joe Biden’s transition officials told reporters that there was a “Beau Biden” flying with him and other family members from Delaware to the nation’s capital ahead of the inauguration.

During the inauguration ceremony, Hunter could be seen holding his youngest child, while touching moments on inauguration night saw the new president carrying the baby while he watched the Celebrating America TV special with his family from the White House.

The emotional scene of President Biden holding the baby named for his late son touched viewers, with many taking to social media to praise Hunter’s decision.

“Unbelievably sweet. I loved that he was holding his grandbaby during the festivities!” one person tweeted.

Another said: “The shots of them watching Demi Lovato with grandson in arms, gently swaying to Lovely Day were so wonderful.”

Others asked for Beau Biden to be a focal point over the next four years of Mr Biden’s presidency, with someone else tweeting: “Four more years of baby Beau Biden please.”

The eight-month-old’s outfit also managed to stand out amid a day of iconic style moments, with some praising the clothes his parents had put him in.

“Little bitty baby Beau Biden in the plaid sports coat and the baby bonnet is too cute,” one person tweeted.

Hunter and Melissa married in May 2019 before welcoming their first child together in March. The president’s son also has four other children, including three daughters: Finnegan, Maisy and Naomi, with his ex-wife Kathleen Biden.

Hunter’s daughter Naomi was also named for a sentimental reason, as she shares her name with President Biden’s late daughter, who died along with his first wife in a car accident in 1972.
