Human remains found in west Tupelo

May 21—TUPELO — Human remains, possibly belonging to a woman missing for 9 months, were found in west Tupelo Saturday.

Tupelo police spokesman Major Chuck McDougald said police were notified around midday May 21 that possible human remains had been located in the Old Belden Circle area. He said the Union County Search and Rescue squad has been conducting follow up searches of that area for a missing person — Lori Ann Cockrell, who was last heard from in August 2021.

Tupelo Investigators are coordinating the recovery of these possible remains. Confirmation and identification of remains is a lengthy process.

McDougald said authorities have been in contact with the Cockrell family and once an identity can be confirmed more information will be released.

Cockrell, 58, was last seen around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 10, 2021 in the 600 block of Filgo Road in west Tupelo. She was last seen wearing a T-shirt and black leggings. At the time of her disappearance, the family said Cockrell suffered from a medical condition that could affect her judgment.
